Adaptation to Climate Change through improved water demand management in irrigated agriculture by introduction of new technologies and best agricultural practices

ACCBAT aims at reducing the use of fresh, good quality water in irrigated agriculture, in order to preserve it for direct human consumption. Improvement of water demand management and increase of water resources availability, through re-use of urban treated wastewater, are the two main approaches chosen to reach the objectives of the project, as good practice in countries subject to water scarcity events and as mitigation measures to the impacts of global climate change. International experts will support training and research activities, and contribute to final dissemination of results.
The project ACCBAT total budget is 4,99 million Euro and it is financed, for an amount of 4,49 million Euro (90%), by the European Union (ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme) through the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.

Project Kick-Off in Rome – Participation of Jordan Team

Eng. Ibrahim Bashabsheh, ACCBAT National Coordinator and Director of NCARE Research Center in Ramtha, Dr. Luna Al Hadidi, ACCBAT Irrigation specialist and researcher at NCARE main Center in Baq’a, and Eng. Berardo da Schio, ACCBAT General Agronomist, participated to project kick-off meeting held in Rome on Tuesday, January 28th.
After introducing NCARE role, activities and main goals, Dr. Luna presented the achievements and the future prospects of ACCBAT project in Jordan and highlighted the opportunities that could derive from current Jordanian legislation with regards to a shared waste-water quality index. Particularly, she presented data from the Jordanian Standard for Reclaimed Wastewater Use in Irrigation (JS893-2006), and the allowable limit for properties and criteria for wastewater reuse in irrigation. Dr. Luna ended the presentation by giving a track record of NCARE experience on treated wastewater research: past, present and future research as well as published scientific papers.
